I've mentioned this previously but wanted to publish this once more - There will be no Second Saturday Market at the Alexandria Museum of Art this month, January. You can still find me today at Suzan Richey's A Bead Boutique today 11am to 5pm, 2924 Jackson St, Alexandria, LA. Last day to buy DebiDeaux Designs in person till Second Saturday on February 11.

Trunk Show @ A Bead Boutique

This is just the 200 spacers & one test bead from the last 2 days - before cleaning. I forgot to take a pic after cleaning before I sorted them into the carrying cases. Most of the spacers have been acid etched. See why I can't post how-to's? I keep forgetting to take pics at all the stages. You can either trust me that they are beautiful beads or you can come see for yourself. Or both.

I will be doing a trunk show at Suzan Richey's A Bead Boutique tomorrow, Tuesday, January 10 from 11am to 5:30pm. I will have all these new spacers and at least a handful of new beads that have not been seen by more than just a few lucky souls. *wink wink nod nod* Oh, and Suzy's got lots of specials going on too. More heart, of course. More 3D flowers. I have an idea for the 3D flowers so you better get them before I get time to put them into a piece.

Lots of focals. I love focals. I could almost make nothing but focals. Lower right is a few of my favorites. I was playing around with silver - foil, wire and reduction glass. Yes, those gold colored beads used silver. In the center there are a couple of Day of the Dead Sugar Skulls. These will make a really neat pendant. Upper left is my excursion into skeleton key beads. These are so cool. The photo does not do them justice.

Look what I found in the kiln this morning! The sparkle on these are fantastic. Better than I'd hoped when I was making them. I have to give credit for the idea to Corina of Corinabeads. Her newsletter yesterday mentioned a technique that I had not played with for a while.

FireDivas Giveaway - I won!

Thanks to the FireDivas Givaway I got these lovely little beads from Patrice Shepherd of ShepherdCreations in the mail today. I've always loved glass and especially glass beads. I used to collect lampwork beads. I learned how to make glass beads as a way to know a good bead from a bad. I got addicted and the rest is DebiDeaux history. But in these past seven years of learning to make beads I stopped collecting them from other beadmakers. I think maybe this win might change this around. It was so enchanting to hold beads in my hand made by someone else. Now I need to decide what I'm gonna do with them. Necklace, bracelet, earrings?

Second Saturday Art Market at the Museum

I'm loving this latest batch of dichroic stringers and frit from Crystal Flipz Designs. I ordered the stringers and she sent me the frit as a little lagnappe and to test it out. It is very subtle but lovely. The sky blue & pale orange encased beads on the left are examples using the dichroic stringers. The large blue frit covered and encased have the dichroic frit blend. They are 3rd from the left.

Music is by Reverend Charley's Patent Medicine Show. Some of the finest artisans in the area will be there with wonderful handmade goodies. Admission to the museum is free during the market. Be sure to check out the museum gift shop while you're there. You can find me outside the main entrance.

I will still be making the drive to New Orleans for the monthly arts market at Palmer Park. I might be taking some of the slower months off to cut down on driving expenses. Hey ya'll - It's a bit late to be posting but it's only 3 hours and lots of fun. Haven't you always wanted to play with fire?

Intro to Glass Beadmaking Class @ NOCGI
This three hour workshop will cover using a torch to make both fun and functional items out of Moretti/Effetre glass rods. Some techniques that will be covered are forming a molten “gather” of glass, making a basic bead on a mandrel, pulling and decorating with stringers and making dots. If time permits, DebiDeaux will demonstrate how to make the student’s choice of one of her complex specialty beads. This workshop will help the student decide if the world of Flameworking is for them and will give a taste of what to expect by taking the next step to more advanced classes.

Beginning Beadmaking Class at NOCGI

This is the one you've been waiting for and asking for...

Beginning Glass Bead Making One Weekend Class w/ Debi Deaux: This one weekend class will cover studio safety and setup, torches and tools, supplies and suppliers. Using Moretti/Effetre glass, students will learn about shaping, surface decoration techniques and color reactions. The student will be introduced to basic flame working skills, including making stringers, stringer control, pulling cane, dots and dot distortion techniques, flowers and encased flowers, complex shaping and sculptural beads. Students should leave the class in possession of a fundamental knowledge of glass bead making, a collection of their own beads and enough safety information to setup their own studio or rent the lampworking studio here at N.O.C.G.I. The cost of the class is $300.00 and is all inclusive. A deposit of ½ down is required to hold your seat in the class. If you are interested in this class please contact Jenny via email (jenny@nocgi.org) or call the studio (504.482.6003). There must be a minimum of 3 students in the class to make it run. 5 seats are available for this class

Fresh From the Flames

Torching therapeutic? Well, maybe if it's fun too. I sat down to the torch and had no inspiration and couldn't find that creative "bone" anywhere in my body.

So I started by putting together some of my favorite color combinations. Then I had a ruffles attacked.
I wound up playing with the pinks first, deep rich ruby gold with dark pink. Then like any good "meal" I had to add some greens - pale emerald and grass green.

Then I had another ruby gold attack! But this time I wanted to put it with orange! Yeah! Love it!
And, of course, more greens with aqua and pea green (yeah, I know - there's a little blue in that aqua).

So where's the therapy? Well after the first two ruffles (which have found their way into my booboo bowl), it was just Zen to wind one after the other.

I'm open to some more color suggestions. I'm trying to keep it to one opaque and one transparent color, for now. On tap next I think I'd like to try that same orange with ink blue. I've got some opal yellow that reminds me of key lime pie that might look mighty nice with a bright medium blue.

I'm assisting Paulette Lizano at NOCGI again this weekend, and next. This time we're doing an extensive glass slumping class. Then on March 20, I'll be teaching a 3 hour workshop. Tonight I will be assisting Paulette Lizano of Lizano's Glass Haus in a "Fused Glass Components" class at NOCGI (New Orleans Creative Glass Institute). There's still room in the class and it is a precursor to the really exciting "Intro to Slumping & Fusing" class in which we will be learning Plate Making to Kiln Carving. And this is just the beginning of these slumping and fusing glass classes.

On March 20 I will be teaching a Beginner's Glass Bead Workshop at NOCGI. I seem to have a few students that have already taken my beginner's class that are interested in continuing with where that class stopped. If I get enough of these students we can make this class an intermediate or even focus on one particular style of bead. Don't forget, we only need 3 students to put the class together.

Yay, I did it! I bought a new tent for the markets. In case you didn't notice - my tent was already getting old and tattered and then this winter I put it up in the back yard to try and protect some of my tropical plants. One night Ol' Man Winter picked that tent up and tossed it into three different neighbors' yards.

I like to take January off anyway so it was no big thing to skip last month's market. I paid a visit to the Arts Market of New Orleans in Palmer Park last month and was sure glad I took it off. Sooo cold. Bbbrrr.

I did not however take January off from the torch. I have lots of new pieces to offer. The cold weather had me thinking of balmy breezes and beaches so my Tree of Life series evolved to a palm tree on a beach. I've made day and night versions. So much fun! My hollow bead lamp/fan pulls have gotten a bit fancier too. I've added a few dots and squiggles to some old colors to add more interest. And of course there's always lots of small "beads for making a bead's" sake. Some old designs revisited and some new designs.

New Classes and Not at Market

First I need to let all my regular customers and visitors know that I will not be at the Arts Market of New Orleans in Palmer Park this Saturday. Well, actually, I will be going but I will be going as a buyer and not a seller. So please, if you want something from me before the February 27th market contact me. We will work something out. I can even hand deliver if you are in the New Orleans area.

Now for the good news - NOCGI has just released a new schedule of classes.
I will be teaching Lampwork Glass Bead Workshop on February 6 and March 20. These are 3 hour Saturday classes.
Also on tap are 2 fusing classes being taught by Paulette Lizano, Fused Glass Components and Intro to Slumping and Fusing. I will be assisting Paulette in these classes.
There is also an Intro to Borosilicate Lampworking being taught by Andrew Jackson Pollack.

Wow, what a difference a month makes. Last month this time I was under pressure trying to fill orders and increase inventory for the holiday sales. No time for play.

Now I can play! Yay!

One thing I enjoyed playing with is some new colors. In my last order from Frantz Art Glass I received several show bundles of CiM Messy colors. I've never used Messy colors before so it was time to play. In the center of the photo is the pink/purple/lavender focal. I started out with a base of Heffalump and swirled in Plum and Evil Queen and topped off with raised dots of Cranberry Pink. Very lovely. I will string this on a beaded necklace, I think. Just to the left of that are 2 spacers using Tamarind and Chai.

One of my most requested pieces is for a ring in orange and purple. Lower left is my latest foray in that direction. I used dark amethyst for the purple and it turned out much deeper than I thought so it appears black. I'm sure someone will love it anyway. It's a size 7.

Upper right is a group of colors encased and dotted in the same color. I made those as I was starting to feel sick and now I don't remember what my intention for them was. Chances are I didn't have my brain in my brain bucket and was just melting glass because I had already cranked up the kiln and torch and didn't wanna waste the session.

Lower center are a couple of beads playing with Fleur de Lis' decorations.

And my favorites of the group - upper left - Beachy beads - Palm on a daytime beach, palm on a nighttime beach and full moon over the beach. I'll be wiring these as pendants and listing them in my Artfire shop.

Now on to business - I will not be attending the Arts Market of New Orleans this month (January 30). I am planning to be there for the February market on Saturday, February 27. If you want something that is not listed in my shop please send me an email at debideauxATcoxDOTnet (be sure to remove the AT and DOT and replace with the corresponding symbols). I am willing to hand deliver in the NOLA area and will ship outside of the area. Anything sold before listing in my online shop gets a 10% discount and free shipping.

It just occured to me that I no longer have deadlines to meet or orders to fill. It's like having a clean slate for the New Year! Woohoo! (oh, I guess that's not totally true. I do have a couple of orders but nothing truly pressing)

And even better is that I've got lots of new (to me) glass to play and experiment with. Yeehaw!

I've got all those Messy Color bundles from Frantz Art Glass. (*see note at bottom) They gave out some mighty fine looking colors with those freebies. I'll hafta admit, I really wasn't expecting much. Now looking at them gets me excited to get back to the torch and try them out. Jeesum petesoids, they've got dust on 'em already.

Many years ago, not long after I was first addicted to fire and glass, I bought an assortment pack of Check glass from Jan Burrows. I made several test beads and then moved back to my Effetre because I had lots more of it and was already familiar with it. I always meant to get back to it. Many times I've wanted to use some of those colors but it is not compatible with other glasses so it's just sat there for all these years. Check glass colors have a wonderful lumnescent quality to them. Now that I am a more experienced beadmaker, this should be some great beads.

I've also got a small assortment of Boro glass, that I'm ashamed to say, have never ever seen the heat of the torch. I've never made a single bead with Boro.

All this to say that today I am making a commitment to myself to put these glasses back in the forefront and start playing with them. Yay for new glass, fun colors and time to play with them.

I'll post some pics when I've got a few to show and tell.

NOCGI Holiday Sale

It's the Chakra ya'll -
far left is what started it all, a bracelet I made for myself with small spacers. I used 2 sets of opaque and one set of transparent, separated with a trio of clear to represent the External. Each set is accented with silver coated Mykonos ceramic spacers.
Center upper is all transparent Chakra colors in a rainbow blend. It's larger than I usually do cylinder beads at 2 1/3 inches long by 1/2 inch diameter. I will be wiring this as a pendant with Swarovski crystals.
Far right is a big hole bead. I like the ruffled edge but the center color, violet, which should be purple looks too grey. This will look nice looped on a satin cord.
Lower left is a gray poodle for a special order.
Lower right is a pale purple heart with ink blue wings and purple irises on each side. I will be wiring this as a pendant.
As for the Chakra experiment, I will be making lots more of the bracelets. The 2 larger beads are, of course, one of a kind. But look for me to play with this Chakra color combo a bit more.

Almost every market I have at least one little kid with a tiny fist of change wanting to know what they can buy for it. I'm calling these little cuties Bugaboos. I'm not going to put a price on them and will charge the kids very little to nothing for them. They make me smile to make them. They make me smile to look at them. They are going to make me smile to send them to a happy little kid.

At the bottom is a multi color transparent with encased silver foil. This was supposed to be the base for the bead just to the left of it, with all the murrini embedded in it. But when I got the encasing where it needed to be for the murrini the silver was glowing so beautifully I just couldn't take it any further. So I left it as is and started another for the murrini.

Some of you may remember me complaining about all the work for little outcome of murrini. Well, I found a shop on Etsy where 2 wonderful artists, LoriandKim, combine their efforts to make some wonderful murrini. I bought an assortment to see how I liked it. I LOVE it! The bead above is just the first of many.

Look for these and many more wonderful glass beads and baubles this weekend at the Holy Name of Mary Fall Festival this weekend - Saturday, October 10 and Sunday, October 11 - starting at noon both days. While they are celebrating the 99th Fall Festival this year, this is the first festival that is not a school fair. So please come out and help to make it a success. We will have several artists, lots of great local food, wonderful local bands and lots more.

Have a Heart! and a Hat!

I absolutely love the winged hearts. If you have a favorite color combination you'd like to see please let me know. I am going to etch the green and dark amethyst hearts. I might cover the wings to leave those shiny but haven't decided yet. Probably will.

I noticed on my screen that the ivory heart with cobalt wings looks lighter than it truly is. Those wings are a deep dark transparent cobalt blue.

This was s'posed to be one of my "Fresh From the Flame" blogs. Well, upon looking at the "fresh" beads this morning I realized that if I publish photos I would be spoiling a surprise...

Some of you might remember a few months ago something called "Craft It Forward". Well, I already sent one of those (that's you, Fifi), but have the others left to fulfill. Well, that's what I worked on yesterday. My CIF project will feature my beads but will also incorporate a little more craftiness.

We have vanilla cupcake with pink frosting, vanilla cupcake with chocolate frosting & pink sprinkles and chocolate cupcake with pink frosting, some generic spacers, a flowered black witches hat and matching flowered black heart.

I will probably turn these beads into wearable art by the end of the month before listing them for sale officially. If you want them for your own design just drop me a line in the next couple of weeks.

Fresh From the Flames - Buttons!

I got my new button mandrel from River's Edge Glass on Artfire earlier this week. Yesterday was the first chance I had to try it out. It comes with 2 sets of mandrels for hole sizes 1/16 inch and 3/32 inch. Each set is 4 - 4 inch mandrel and one rubber o-ring to hold them onto the main mandrel. The first thing I did was cut and grind down several more of each size mandrel.

The image on the left is the 3/32's on the left and the 1/16's on the right.

The pic on the right you might notice a broken button on the left. Such a bummer. It was the most intricate and best of the bunch. There's a wonderful murrini in the center and bubbles around the edge.

I had a lot of trouble removing the buttons from the 1/16 mandrels. I bent 3 of 8 mandrels removing the buttons. On the other hand (er, other mandrel) the 3/32 mandrels slid off the button like butter off a hot knife. I'm going to pay a lot more attention to the mandrel and the bead release next time to see if it was something I did wrong. Looking at the mandrels I have at the ready, I've noticed that the bead release appears thicker on the 3/32 mandrels and thinner on the 1/16. So hopefully I can rid myself of this problem with just a little extra bead release. I am using Foster Fire Smooth & Tuff.

The instructions that come with the mandrel explain 2 different ways to start the button. My favorite was to place a murrini in the center and wrap around it. It worked great and turned out beautiful in the 1/16 inch mandrel. In the 3/32 button the murrini was too small and I had a hard time getting it started and centered. That's it on the right side of the lower pic. I can solve this problem by making my murrini a little bigger next time with this in mind. I'd also like to give a try to including pieces of murrini all the way around and not just in the center. My mind sees it as almost like a kaleidoscope.

I sat down to the torch fully intending to make cats and dogs for the fall and holiday demands. Next thing I know I'm playing with frit again. I started out with the heart on the bottom (click on the image to get a closer look). It is a dark ivory base covered with silver foil and then with Double Helix Triton frit and encased in Precision Diamond Clear and popped in a couple of pieces of dichro just for fun.

Next came the 5 lentil beads in pale lavender with the same DH Triton frit on the first layer, then reduced to bring out the color and encased in more pale lavender. Then, and only because it was already made and sitting near to hand and I'd seen someone else use it earlier in the day, I popped a little band of silvered ivory around the center and swirled it before pressing.

I followed these with some spacers in pale lavender rolled in the same frit. But because I didn't encase them after the effect is completely different. So I made several more spacers without the frit but with the silvered ivory.

After all this, I've decided I'm not really that excited about the Triton frit with the pale lavender effetre, neither encased nor left open. However, I'm thinking I might etch these. I'll post another pic if I do.

More Scotties, one gray and one white.

Below the pups are some test beads. Quite a while ago I got a sampler of several different frits from Double Helix. When I first got them I ran a test with each frit and made several spacers for each, a black, a white, an ivory and a clear. But since then I haven't done much with them at all. The test beads are hanging above my torch for reference and I've pulled one out on occasion but not often.
This time I decided to test the frits more extensively one at a time. So I made full size lentil beads. I make my lentils by making a small barrel shape the width of the press, I put frit on that first layer, reduced it and then encased it with the same color, filling out the rest of the bead before pressing for the lentil shape. On the first two I made (the aqua and the cobalt), I rolled the finished bead in the frit again before pressing. The rest have only the encased frit.
I used the Double Helix Nyx frit on (from the top down) medium blue, medium amber, lavender (yeah, I know it looks blue but it's that one that changes color with the light), light grass green, cobalt blue, light aqua.
The verdict? I like them all. The cobalt and the medium blue are very subtle. The grass green is the most striking. The aqua and the lavender are my personal favorites. The amber has almost an animal look to it.

I love this little white Scotty dog. I've made these in gray before but this is the first one in white. He will not be the last. As a matter of fact I'm gonna go make some more as soon as I finish posting this blog.
Then we have Mama black cat with baby black cat.
I really wanted to do more but the t-storms had Boomer in a tizzy and I had to pay attention to him and not my flame.

Remember yesterday's Fresh From the Flames? Well, I etched them. I really like the colors a lot more, including the ones I didn't care for as much, the dark emerald over sky blue (center right) and the light grass green over sky blue (center bottom) have a luminosity that didn't show before etching. I dabbed a bit of nail polish on all the cobalt blue dots. That tiny bit of shine on each bead is really neato cool.

I've been playing with layering colors. The 3 chiclet shape beads on the far left were the starters. The larger dark green is sky blue encased with dark emerald. Nice but not special enough to merit the work involved in the encasing. Oh, the stripe is silvered ivory. Just above the dark emerald is a smaller bead with the same sky blue encased with light grass green. Again, the color is nice but not special enough for the work involved in encasing.
Just above these beads is the test bead that led to the main beads in the group. It is the same sky blue encased with pale emerald this time. It's a wonderful pale mint green.
To the right of those test beads are some spacer beads also playing with colors. The dotted beads are the same sky blue with cobalt dots. The purple are light amethyst over dark pink. I used that same light amethyst over dark pink for the 3 ruffled beads in the center. And next to those are sky blue and pale emerald ruffle beads.
Now for the "main attraction" - take all these ingredients and come up with sky blue encased with pale emerald with flowers of the dark pink encased with medium amethyst with sky blue and cobalt centers. I've decided I'm going to etch them. These pale colors look very luminous after etching. I'm already envisioning these as a bracelet.

Just a little note here - when I say the color is not special enough, I mean that I can acheive this look easily without the extra steps of encasing.

Coral, pea green, ink blue. I posted a question on Facebook yesterday for a 3 color combo for fun. First to answer was Marci of Studio Marci.
I don't think I'd ever used this particular coral as a base before. I found out right away that it didn't take kindly to being the base. So, about the second or third bead I started by laying down a small tube of clear then layered the coral on top. What a difference. Anytime I come across a color that doesn't like being moved around a lot, a small base of clear or any other transparent will bring almost always bring it right into the happy place. The pea green stringer wasn't being very nice either but I think that was mostly me. My hands were not as steady as they should have been for stringer control. The ink blue looks lost in the pic but is much better looking in person. Although, next time I think I will encase some white in the ink blue next time. Also am thinking I will reverse the colors - use the pea green as a base for the coral and ink blue. hhhmmm...

Doesn't look much like a sock monkey, huh? Oh well, back to the drawing board, er, torch. I'll try again - larger mouth, smaller eyes, larger & lower ears, maybe no nostrils (?).
The Schnauzer came out nice and the kitty was s'posed to be wonky-eyed. LOL
I still need to make some cupcakes, ice cream cones and turtles for the kiddies.

This set is similar in technique to the set I called "Striations". I'm not sure what I think about the result just yet. The color stria are very subtle and understated. I really wanted more purple in them. The camera does not capture the underlying glow in these beads.

The three beads on the right were test runs and not part of the final set. Too much yellow in the one, too much blue in another, not enough silver in the last.

A coupla new Gumbo Ladies - upper center is just a little over 3/4 inch and I will wire her as a pendant.
Lower center is 1 1/4 inch across with her hole for stringing running horizontally. She will be quite happy on an adjustable satin cord.
Bicone on the left is a silvered ivory base with a twist of dichro around it. The camera does not even come close to capturing the inner glow of this bead. It's going to look great in a beaded necklace.
Tree of Life on the right. I grabbed the wrong green for the bottom and didn't get the depth of color I was intending for this but it still came out quite nice. This one will also look very nice in a beaded necklace.

Fresh From the Flames - Herd of Turtles is Back!

Great news ya'll - I've finally started sculpting again. And I got it off with a small "Herd of Turtles".
From left to right - Red with blue dots, (aqua spacers for another project), dark coral with copper green dots, yellow with blue dots, black with green dots, blue with yellow dots. I guess I was a bit "dotty" last night. Mwahahaha.
It's my plan to do more of the ever so popular turtles in several designs. Heads up for the Moms out there with turtle-lovin' kids - since most of the turtles are destined to be adopted by a youngster I've decided to skip those tiny little toes on the feet. The tiny toes seem to be the one thing that breaks off if handled roughly. And for the good news - since I'm not adding the toes I can make a turtle faster than one with toes - which results in a cost savings to you! Yay!
I'm taking requests for Halloween and Christmas already. It really is only a few months away. I'm doing a few more shows and festivals this fall. Look for the schedule to be posted soon.

I think I finally came out of that slump I blogged about last time. But at the same time I've changed my stride too. As beautiful as the hollow fanpulls are, I got seriously bored of them after so many. I know I'll have to make more with fall and the Holidays coming. But I'm really happy to be doing something different for now.
On the left is a LadyBug. She is so cute and will look great on a black satin cord. I will not be listing her in my online shop because I know that she will sell at my next market. If you want her before then just let me know in a comment to this blog and we'll work it out.
On the right is a beadset I'm calling "Striations". The design is a combination of silver foil, silvered ivory and latticino on cobalt blue. It's quite lovely and the pic does not do the shine and inner glow any justice. I'm envisioning these beads surrounded by Bali silver in a bracelet and will probably make my vision a fact before the next market. If you want them before I use them or if you want a custom piece using them just let me know in a comment to this blog.
Now, what is this "next market" I keep mentioning? I thought you'd never ask...

What Difference a Day Makes (Fresh From the Flames)

Ever have "one of those days"? I just couldn't seem to get the glass to do what I wanted it to yesterday.
Case in point:
Far left is the start of a medium blue Fleur de Lis. Can you see the bubbles? I'm gonna hafta admit that I started this just as "So You Think You Can Dance" was getting going. By the time I had enough glass wound on to get my base I noticed bubbles everywhere. *piffle*
So I started again. That would be the second blue bead. Next thing I know I've put too much glass for a FDL so I just crunched it and decorated.
Now the clear hollow in the center. Remember yesterday's clear hollow? It came out so absolutely perfect. And it practically made itself. I couldn't stop admiring it when I was cleaning it. Well, I used Precision Diamond Clear for that one. This one is from a batch of Effetre I have that's really pretty clean. But it kept falling in on itself and just never would puff up completely. I'd sure like to hear what anyone else has experienced with this.
Second from the right is that start of an amber hollow. About the third or fourth winding the release broke on the left side. I tried to rescue the left side by turning it into a ruffled disc but it's not a keeper either. *double piffle* The next try with the amber hollow came out just fine.
Notice the empty mandrel in the center? Well, that was my last attempt at bead creation last night and as I was warming the glass and the mandrel, the release started to crack. At that point I decided I was swimming against the tide. And since I'm not a spawning salmon, I wrapped it up. Never one to give up completely I'll be back playing with fire in just a little while. Wish me luck and creativity.

Wow, I realllly like the way these Fleur de Lis' are turning out. On the far left - pale emerald with purple heart and gold banding. Center - Blue with a red heart and white banding.
I think the clear hollow is the first one I've ever made using clear. I'm stunned to realize this because it is so beautiful. I know I will be making many more of these. The possibilities for filling the clear hollows are practically endless. I'm thinking tiny shells and sand. Colored beads...
The lower center - a medium blue hollow.
On the far right - a test bead using a latticino I made. You can't really tell from the photo but test passed.
I plan to wire these as pendants and fan pulls by the end of the week. If you are interested in buying one of these contact me. The price is significantly less if bought before I list in my shop.

Another black Fleur de Lis and an dark aqua one. I am going to etch both of these. One more pale emerald green hollow for a fan pull. A focal crunch bead testing lavender and raku frit. A color experiment with black and DH terra.

Black Fleur de Lis with goldstone banding. The largest is 2 inches long, the other 2 are just a bit over 1 inch. I really like the largest one and am going to string it with some simple black beads for a necklace. I was thinking about etching them but think I will resist for now.

Five discs and 4 spacers - cranberry and green flowers with a subtle ring of silvered plum on dark amethyst.
I listed these on Artfire but I don't think they'll last long cuz if they sit around I will add some Bali silver beads and a clasp and make a bracelet.

Help! I'm becoming addicted to etching... just kidding. But seriously the effect of etching on transparent glass beads is sooo luminescent.
I'm a big fan of transparent glass. I choose transparent over opaque all the time. With etching, the transparent glass loses some of it's transparency but gains a wonderful glowing luminosity. I looks like it's glowing from within.

From upper left: green, aqua and lavender hollows, 2 twister beads, dichro heart, center: 2 encased beads.

Since I know I'll be asked - I use Armour Etch Glass Etching Cream. I can't really say I recommend it over any other brand because I've never used (or even found in the stores) any other brand.
The directions on the bottle are given for etching with a stencil. I use an etching dedicated plastic container and old beat-up paint brush. I place all the pieces I want to etch in the container and cover them with the etching cream using the brush to get into all the little nooks and crannies. I then let it sit for a few minutes (sometimes 10 sometimes 30 depends on my attention span). I then come back to it and using the old paint brush, I move the beads around in the cream and turn them over and spread the cream around. Then I let them sit for a while again. I then use my old paint brush to remove and save as much of the etching cream as possible. I just put it all back into the bottle. Yup, you can reuse the etching cream. Yay! That's a good thing cuz this stuff is not cheap. After I have reclaimed as much of the cream as I can I put on my plastic gloves and clean my beads in running water. I sometimes take an old toothbrush to the ones with lots of nooks and crannies and once in a while I just let them soak for a while after rinsing then scrub and rinse again. Then dry and admire the glow. Oh, one note about drying - while your beads are wet they will look shiny and not like they are etched. So wait until they are completely dry before taking stock of your beautiful work.

This summer I have been invited to teach and share my love of flamework/lampwork glass bead making at the NOCGI Glass Blast Summer Class for kids and teens. This summer camp will include lots more than just beadmaking. There will be glass blowing, lampworking, glass etching, glass fusing, stained glass and so much more. The New Orleans Creative Glass Institute presents:

our 1st annual Glass Blast Summer Camp for kids and teens!

We will be offering two sessions this summer for kids and teens ages 10 to 17.

Session One: will run July 6th thru July 10th 9am-4pm

Session Two: will run July 13th thru July 17th 9am-4pm

Each session cost $425.00 per child. There are 20 spots available for each week. The camp will be held at our studio in

Mid-city, 3924 Conti St, (near the intersection of Carrollton and Bienville).

In this camp students will get the opportunity to work with many forms of glass to create inspired projects in a safe and fun learning environment. Students will learn about glass blowing, lampworking, slumping and fusing, stained glass and more!

Registration begins Monday June 1st and will close Wednesday July 1st.

From upper left going clockwise -
Hollows - 1 aqua and 2 lavender for special order fan pulls.
Mixed lavender, purples and dichro focal. I plan to acid etch this one to bring out the luminous colors.
Twister, I saw this one on a tut online and gave it a try with some of my own colors. I think I will do it again without the silver foil. I like everything else about the bead and the technique. Thanks to Margaret Zinser for the tut.
The ivory oval was a test of some old stringer I wasn't sure what it was. And, yup, it's some leftover Terra. I need to guard it jealously since it's not being made anymore.
The heart just kinda happened when I started to make a large lentil. That's a trail of ink blue and aqua in the center with a little swirl in the center and bottom.

The Arts Council has a great entertainment lineup again. My friend, Kay Caldwell's band, Some Like It Hot will be playing. If you've never heard this group, c'mon out and let them put a big smile on your face. They start at 1 pm.

I've got lots of new pieces. The handful of Fleur de Lis beads pictured are just a small taste. I've also used plenty of my glass beads in some new finished jewelry pieces for your immediate wearing pleasure.

Etched Fleur de Lis' in lavender (the one that changes with the light), light green and dark amethyst, with a silver winding. I will be listing these on Artfire soon but not for long. I will plan to use some to make pendants for Arts Market of New Orleans next Saturday, May 30, 2009, 10am to 4pm.

Several more hollows, a pale green Fleur de Lis, 2 cupcakes.

Lower left - chocolate cupcake with yellow dotted bottom. This one didn't come out the way I imagined it. I think I'll use a brighter yellow next time. The top came out nicely. Chocolate cupcake with pink frosting.
Upper center - chocolate cupcake with cream frosting. Looks yummy.
Upper right - FDL is a bit wider than I like to make them, but still nice. I think I will etch this one. Etching looks quite nice on this pale green glass.
Hollows - most are duplicates of the ones already for sale in my Artfire Shop so I think I will fill these with seed beads and wire for lamp pulls. Look for them in the shop or at my next market in a few.
My next market will be the Art Market of New Orleans on Saturday, May 30, 10am to 4pm. I don't have the band and activity info yet but I think my friend Kay's band, "Some Like It Hot" is on the lineup. I know that's always a good time. Mark your calendar and be sure to come out to see us. Don't forget to mention reading about it here to get a 10% (or more) discount.

I just listed several Goddesses and hollow beads in my Artfire shop. The pic above is a handful of the hollows. The hollows were made on a 3/32 inch mandrel so the hole is large enough to fill the hollow bead with small seed beads. They make a wonderful fan/lamp pull.

Arts Market Saturday March 28

It's official - the Arts Market of New Orleans will go on as scheduled. Weather is predicted to clear up early. I'll have my floor mats down to keep your feet high and dry. The Arts Market has lined up Papillion's Cajun & Zydeco Music Show for the Kid's Tent. Adults can rock out to Washboard Chaz Trio and Bamboula 2000. And, of course, some of the best artists in the area.

Please come out to Palmer Park - corner of S Carrollton & S Claiborne, tomorrow, this Saturday, March 28, 10am to 4pm.

Pictured above is a hand full of rings in sizes from 4 to 10. I took a look at the rings I have for sale this month and discovered all blues and greens. So I tried to even it out with some yellow and red. Each ring has a Cubic Zirconium in the center. Click on the image for a closer looksee.

Blue, Aqua, Green and rings, rings, rings and roses - I finally got the new sizes of ring mandrels in. Yay! It took 2 weeks to get them from ArrowSprings. They took a whole week to just process the order. With no explanation why it took so long **sigh**
Annnywaaay - I've had so many requests for rings I picked a few colors and filled the mandrels. Sizes range from 4 1/2 to 10. The rings you see above still need to be polished on the inside to remove the haziness you see on the inside. All of these rings have a cubic zirconia in the center. I wish I could capture the sparkle.

You can see the sparkle for yourself at the Arts Market of New Orleans in Palmer Park on the corner of S Carrollton and S Claiborne. The market is scheduled for this Saturday, March 28, 10am to 4pm. Please watch for updates though because the forecast is for storms and the market might be rescheduled to Sunday if that is the case.

Now I gotta go polish those rings and...

Okay, maybe not as fresh as it should be -
This dragon was made last fall. I'm including him here for comparison to the next one -

The little green guy is the one I made. I saw one of Marcy Lamberson's dragons and they are just so "cute". My dragons just are not that cute. So I went for small and holding a heart thinking that would look cute. Well, I think he looks like a mouse with horns. LOL Oh, btw, the big brown one is from my collection and has taken up residence on my dresser.
My next bead is the Tree of Life. I'm going to have to give this to a very dear friend of mine because she pops into my head every time I look at it. I'm not going to mention her name yet just in case she's reading my blogs.

Now I think I need to get back to making beads. I wanted to say "regular" or even "plain" but that really does those kinds an injustice.

Cubic Zirconium, rings and big-hole beads - that's what keeps coming up in my flamework lately.
Starting at upper left going clockwise - dark amethyst ring with 4 petaled flower with CZ center, bright green ring with rose with CZ center, ivory cylinder with greenery and roses - 1/8 inch hole to fit on bottle stopper, 3 CZ flower beads, transparent tab with raku, Big hole ivory bead (center) with copper green, silvered plum and purple dots.

Look for the rings on Etsy soon. The 3 cz flower beads will be listed in my Artfire shop soon. The red raku tab will be made into a necklace and then listed on Etsy.

Amethyst Sparkle on Artfire

I have to give credit to these beads to Corina of CorinaBeads.com. I've tried to place CZ's in my beads for years with various degrees of success. Usually it was so difficult to get the CZ where I wanted it that it just wasn't worth the effort. A while back I read on Corina's site about using Elmer's glue to adhere the CZ to a mandrel. A few days ago I finally came across my collection of CZ's and gave it a try. Voila! Thank you, Corina!
I took the pics in the sunshine and still was not able to capture the full sparkle of seeing these shine in your hand.

Lattice Beading In Progress

I seem to be a little distracted from the flame for the last few days by a beading project I originally found in Bead & Button magazine. That's one of my organic beads as the focal. I've used a dark blue for the base and an aquamarine blue for the lattice. I am now looking for a pale pearl blue for the twining around. I don't think I will be adding leaves and flowers like the magazine's example but may change my mind on that.

Just yesterday I walked out to my yard with the dogs and found these wonderful flowers:
I know I planted these last year but they never did bloom and I'd forgotten all about them and would have plowed them under in another few days. Now I'm obsessed with these colors - the gradient lavendar, ink blue and orange. So be forwarned, these will be showing up in my work for a while.
